What we collect — and what we don't.

Footnotes is a reading site first. We avoid trackers. This page is the plain-language record of how data works here.

What we collect

  • Newsletter email — only if you subscribe. We send it to our email provider (Buttondown) for double opt-in delivery. Unsubscribe anytime via the link in each email.
  • Theme preference — stored in your browser as footnotes-theme (light or dark). It never leaves your device and is not an identifier.

What we don't collect

  • No Google Analytics, ad pixels, or social tracking SDKs.
  • No accounts, profiles, or comments.
  • No sale of personal data.

Third parties

  • Buttondown — newsletter delivery when you subscribe. Their processing is governed by their privacy policy.
  • Cloudflare — hosts the site and may process standard request logs (IP, user agent) as part of serving pages.
  • Media — story covers may load from media.footnotesdaily.com (our media bucket).
  • Social platforms — only if you follow an outbound link (Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, share destinations).
